Our History
In the beating heart of Turin, during an era of great change and new opportunities, Bernardino Martini was born — a young man with an adventurous spirit and an unwavering determination. As a boy, the call of the horizon led him to embark on merchant ships that carried him to distant ports around the world. But his love for his homeland brought him back to his native city, where in 1880, he decided to establish his own business: “Bernardino Martini & Figli”, specializing in the production of Vermouth and fortified wines.
In the years that followed, the passion for winemaking was passed down from father to son. Born in 1885, Ferdinando Martini joined his father in expanding the family business, founding a new facility in 1910 in Novoli, in the heart of Salento. There, the rich and structured wines of the south met the Piedmontese tradition, creating a perfect harmony of flavors and craftsmanship. Meanwhile, in Turin, Antonio Sperone Sr. was born in 1891 — a man destined to make his mark in the wine world as one of the city’s most renowned sellers of high-quality bulk wines.
The destiny of the Sperone family was forever shaped by the union of two great winemaking dynasties. In 1915, Giacomo Sperone was born, heir to this noble passion. Educated at the prestigious Enological School of Alba, Giacomo became an outstanding winemaker. His talent led him to cross paths with Laura Martini, born in 1917, daughter of Ferdinando. Their shared love for winemaking and family tradition united them in marriage in 1939. As part of his dowry, Giacomo received the historic family business and a precious recipe book containing ancient formulas for Vermouth and fortified wines — treasured to this day.
The 1950s marked a new chapter for the family. Giacomo moved the company to Milan in 1952 to expand production, seek new commercial opportunities, improve logistics, enhance connectivity with different regions of Italy, and open up to export markets. Later, in 1962, he permanently established it in Cusano Milanino. Here, between modernity and tradition, new cellars were built for Vermouth and sparkling wines, along with innovative bottling lines. During this time, one of the company’s most iconic products was born: “Caravella Limoncello”, destined to conquer the world with its fresh and enveloping flavor.
With the arrival of Giacomo’s sons, Paolo and Antonio, in the 1970s, the company expanded its horizons, reaching international markets. In 1982, the family reaffirmed its deep connection to Piedmont by founding “Tenute Neirano” in Mombaruzzo — a place where winemaking merges with the poetry of the landscape.
In 2013, the company Giacomo Sperone was publicly recognized as a historic business by the Municipality of Cusano Milanino.
Today, under the leadership of the fifth generation, represented by Francesca and Andrea Sperone, the company continues to write its story, intertwining innovation with deep respect for tradition. In 2017, their passion and bond with the city of Turin were rewarded with the official recognition of Vermouth di Torino IGP, a seal of quality and authenticity.
The story of the Sperone family is a tale of a journey, of a passion passed down through generations, and of a love for wine that continues to inspire and delight, one glass at a time.
